The importance of a good workout shoe

If you have had your current sneakers for over two years, it’s time to toss them and get yourself a new pair! Contrary to what many people think, your workout shoes need to be replaced before they start falling apart! Proper footwear provides you the support you need to workout effectively and reduce stress on your joints. This is especially true if you do high impact working out like running or aerobics. Running shoes have shock absorbers and arch supports depending on your foot strike to reduce stress on the knees and ankle. Aerobics shoes have more cushioning on the ball of the foot where you step the most. Tennis shoes have a flexible sole to assist with side-to-side movements. If you are starting a fitness regimen that includes strength training and moderate cardio, consider a cross training shoe to help with a variety of movements. You typically want to replace your workout shoes once a year if you are using them consistently. Joggers will need to replace them every 300-500 miles, or about every 20-25 weeks. If you are experiencing joint pain, consider taking your shoe into a sports store to see if you are in the proper shoe for your foot type, and if the sole or arch has started to wear down. When you try on your shoe, do so when your feet are at their largest in the afternoon or evening. Make sure you have a thumb’s width between your big toe and the tip of the shoe. Our personal trainers work with clients to ensure they safely work towards their fitness goals. Finding the right workout shoe plays an essential role!
