Piriformis Syndrome

Have you ever experienced shooting pain in your lower back, pain in your hips, or had a tingling sensation down your leg into your feet? If you answered yes to any of these questions there is a chance you have piriformis syndrome. Piriformis syndrome is a neuromuscular disorder that affects your hips and butt and is caused from spasms and/or inflammation in your piriformis muscle. The spasms and/or inflammation can compress against your sciatic nerve causing pain. Your piriformis muscle is located near your hip joint behind your gluteus maximus. It helps the hip joint lift, rotate and move, which allows you to walk, lift your leg, and many other everyday activities. Fortunately there are many stretches and exercises we can perform to correct the issue. A few exercises that can help are clamshells, bridges, and fire hydrates.
