Childhood Obesity

Childhood obesity is an epidemic in the United States. When I was a child we were always outside running around, playing at the playground, or riding bikes. Now days it is more common for kids to come home and plop in front of the television or computer and play video games. We have to change this; the first step is to show your kids that exercise is fun! You can start by playing tag, go on family bike rides, or find a sport your child likes. Start out with short amounts of exercise and increase slowly.
According to a study from Science Daily, the most effective way for over weight children to lose body fat is a combination of resistance training and aerobic training. Convincing a child to do strength training can be a little more difficult then just playing a sport.
So, a fun way to make the entire family exercise is to have some friendly competition! Make a chart and keep track of how many jumping jacks, push-ups, crunches, and squats each person in the family can perform. The kids will want to practice so they will get better. At the end of the month have prizes for the winner, and most improved. Make sure that the adults of the family are participating also, if you act like it is fun the kids will think it’s fun!
