Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome is numbness, tingling, weakness, and other problems in your hand because of pressure on the median nerve in your wrist. The median nerve and several tendons run from your forearm to your hand through a small space in your wrist called the carpal tunnel. The median nerve controls movement and feeling in your thumb and first three fingers. Pressure on the median nerve causes carpal tunnel syndrome, this pressure can come from swelling or anything that makes the carpal tunnel smaller. Many things can cause this including; illness, making the same hand movements over and over, and pregnancy. A lot of people that are diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome assume that they can no longer work out. This is not the case. Working out can still be done with a few precautions. Wearing a brace to stabilize your wrist can help; this also keeps you aware of the positioning of your wrist throughout the workout. You no longer want to put a lot of pressure on your hand when your wrist is bent. This means no more push ups, or planks. Also after the workout it is best to ice your wrists, this will reduce the inflammation that can occur as a result of the activity. Like any other injury pay attention to your body, if something is causing pain, stop immediately. Do not give up!
